それが、生き物の命を素材に変えるタンナーの使命であり、そのことだけを考えて技術を磨き続けていると言っても過言ではありません。クロコダイルの革が、輝きを増すことはあれ、劣化が著しくゆるやかなのは皮の緻密な繊維構造ゆえですが、そこには、タンナーごとのこだわりが存在します。フジトヨクロコの品質を支えるこだわりの一部をご紹介します。

It is the mission of us as a tanner who transforms the lives of living things into materials, and it is no exaggeration to say that we continue to hone our skills with only that in mind. Although crocodile leather may increase its brilliance with time, it also deteriorates but remarkably slowly due to the elaborate fiber structure of its leather. Because of this each tanner has their own particular techniques. Here are some of our particular techniques that support the quality of FUJITOYO’s crocodile leather.
他の革と同様、いくつものドラム（攪拌のための機械）を使って鞣し（なめし）と染色を行います。フジトヨでは、樹脂製やステンレス製、そして木製と、さまざまな素材のドラムを使い分けながら、理想の品質を追求しています。昔ながらの木製ドラムも、真夏や真冬の極端な気温の影響を和らげるという特性が品質に貢献するため、弊社では今でも使用しています。
Like other leather, it is tanned and dyed using a number of drums (machines for agitation). We pursue the ideal quality by using drums made of various materials such as synthetic resin, stainless steel, and wood. We still use the traditional wooden drums, as they contribute to the quality of our leather due to its ability to soften the negative effects of extreme temperatures in midsummer and midwinter.
2020年にオリジナル自動乾燥機を開発・設置し、内製率100％を達成しました。乾燥はオートメーションになりましたが、“革張り”はすべて手作業です。革の繊維に余計な負荷をかけて堅牢性に影響が出ないように、また、革の立体感や風合いが損なわれないように、革の個性を1枚1枚見極めながら、適切なテンションと角度で張っていきます。
In 2020, we developed and installed an original automatic dryer, achieving a 100% in-house production rate. Drying is now automated, but the “toggling” is yet all done by hand. In order not to impose any excessive tension on the leather fiber which affects its robustness and to prevent the supple texture of the leather from being damaged, we carefully select the appropriate tension and angle of the toggles while assessing the individuality of each leather one by one.
フジトヨは、100％水染めによる正確な発色を得意としています。皮の繊維そのものに浸透させる水溶性の染料のみで発色させる技法で、クロコダイル独自の斑（ふ）の立体感を生かせるだけでなく、滑らかな手触りを表現することができます。いずれも、クロコダイルの本質的な魅力であると考えています。
FUJITOYO specializes in accurate coloring with 100％ drum dyeing. It is a technique that develops color only with dyes that permeate the fibers of the skin itself, and not only impart the supple and textured appearance of crocodile's unique scales, but also enable a smooth texture. We believe that all of these are essential charms of the crocodile leather.
経年変化を楽しむ「エイジング」の概念がクロコダイル革に対しても求められる時代が来ると考え、グレージング仕上げの全盛期だった80年代から「ソフト仕上げ」の技術を向上させ続けてきました。染色直後と乾燥後との色濃度の違いを逆算して染色する弊社独自のレシピで、染料や顔料による色の補正が一切不要な「すっぴん」の美しいクロコ革が完成します。
Believing the potential of crocodile leather to be cherished and nurtured over time with touch and skin oil of its user, we have continued to improve our technology of "soft finish" since 1980’ when glazed leather was at its peak. Our original recipe precisely assessing the level of dye penetration and how it appears when dried can produce beautifully colored crocodile leather without need to be retouched afterwards to achieve desired finish with pigments.
革の品質に直結するのは、クロコダイルの産地ではなく、飼育状態や処理技術であると考えます。そのため、どの原産国の皮が優れているかという問いにフジトヨは明確にお答えしていません。良好な飼育環境、清潔な設備、素早く皮を処理できるスキル、そして皮へのリスペクトを持った東南アジアや南アフリカの優良な業者と直接提携しています。
We believe what directly linked to the quality of the leather is not the provenance of it but how carefully those crocodiles are raised and techniques applied to their skins to be processed. Therefore, FUJITOYO cannot provide a straightforward answer to the inquiry asking which country of origin produces the best crocodile leather. We have direct affiliation with the best in class partners in southeast asia and south african regions who have excellent nurturing environments, sanitized facilities, skills to process fast, and most of all respect to the lives enables us to appreciate their leather.
VEGETABLE TANNING / クロコのヌメ革
植物性のタンニンのみで鞣したヌメ革は、いわゆる「生成り」の革。フジトヨは牛や豚の革において伝統的なこの技術をクロコに移し替え、2002年、世界に先駆けて「クロコのヌメ革」を完成させました。ヌメ革はいわば染色前のすっぴん状態ですが、革を繊維の内側から潤わせ、きめ細やかに整える弊社の鞣し技術により、世にも美しいクロコのヌメ革が実現しました。
このヌメ革を藍や茜などの天然染料で染めたナチュラルシリーズは、JIS規格「染色堅牢度（耐光）」において、革全般における及第点である「3級」を達成しています。
The leather tanned only with vegetable tannin is so-called “vegetable-tanned” leather. This traditional technique for cow and pig leather was improved and transferred to crocodile leather, and in 2002 we pioneered to complete "Vegetable-tanned Crocodile Leather". Vegetable-tanned leather is in no-makeup state before dyeing, but our tanning technology, which moisturizes the leather from the inside of the fibers and refines it smoothly, has achieved the most beautiful Vegetable-tanned Crocodile Leather in the world.
Our Natural Series, Vegetable-tanned Crocodile Leather dyed with natural dyes such as indigo and madder, has achieved grade 3 in terms of JIS standard color fastness (light resistance), which is the highest grade for leather in general.
DECORATIVE FINISHES / 独自のアートクロコ
「すっぴん」の状態でもきめが細かく滑らかなフジトヨクロコは、いわゆる“化粧ノリ”が非常に良く、発色と耐久性に優れた高品質なアート加工を可能にします。カラフルなペイント加工、ラメ加工、レインボー加工、エンボス加工etc…、さまざまな表現で、クロコダイル革の風格を保ちつつ新しい魅力を引き出します。
カラフルなものばかりではなく、アンティーク風の仕上げやシックな艶消し加工（写真右）などもアート加工の一貫です。過去には、染色家とのコラボ作品も手がけました。
FUJITOYO’s crocodile leather which has a very perky and silky surface makes applying various decorative finishes easier so that it enables high-quality results with excellent durability. Colorful paint, metallic, iridescent, embossed, etc., we can bring out an unprecedented charm while maintaining the elegance of crocodile leather.
In addition to colorful treatments, antique-style finishes and chic matte finish (right photo) are part of our finish processings. In the past, we also worked on collaborative works with eminent dyeing experts.
